There has been an ongoing debate — and it continues to this day — about whether online or offline is better. Many would argue that brick-and-mortar stores are still the main reason why brands succeed, despite the growing dominance of online platforms. However, the Philippine Retailers Association (PRA) received a candid and straightforward response from its first guest of the new season of its critically acclaimed podcast, Let’s Talk Retail.
Jerald Sze, the Founder and Managing Director of Straightforward, a brand known for simplifying fashion with versatile, timeless basics designed for young, stylish go-getters, shared his insights during an interview with CJ Jesena, Leasing Consultant and PRA Thought Leader. Jerald boldly stated, “Success begins online first. If we rely on mall traffic alone, we’re not going to survive.”
While it is undeniable that many brands have established online platforms to complement their physical stores, Jerald emphasized the importance of prioritizing the online presence over simply relying on physical stores. He explained, “Right now, the game of shopping actually does not start in malls; it starts on mobile. And we’re fortunate enough to have physical stores, so when we went online or on mobile, we were able to activate that behavior — or whatever it is that we unlock on mobile — in our physical stores.”
This insightful episode of Let’s Talk Retail delves deep into the evolving dynamics of retail and how brands must adapt to the ever-changing landscape. It’s not just about blending online and offline efforts; it’s about recognizing that the future of retail is not bound by location but driven by the powerful connection brands can create across all touchpoints.
The newest season of Let’s Talk Retail, featuring Jerald Sze, will be available on PRA’s Facebook, YouTube, and Spotify on February 28 at 10:00 AM. Be sure to subscribe so you don’t miss it!
